CoastWatch: Access Rights Print E-mail
Wednesday, 12 November 2008

Providence photographer Kathie Florsheim has been working for several years to document life along the coast in southern New England. Her concerns encompass not only the visual impact of the shoreline, but also what those visuals tell us about how our society relates to and values the natural environment. This leads to lots of interesting work, and some interesting insights from Kathie as well.

If, by chance, you think photographing  along the coastline sounds like an peachy job, consider that you will carry a camera, wear a photo jacket with equipment and film stuck in every pocket, a hat to protect you from the sun, sunscreen, shoes and a lot more clothing than a bathing suit. This July, in pursuit of photographic nirvana, I photographed on 13 beaches in Dennis, Mass. My mania occurred over the hottest weekend of the year, so the beaches were throbbing with people. That reality made empty, private beaches flanking the public watering holes all the more conspicuous. Preceding the delight of pulsating with a large crowd, is the pleasure of finding a parking space, or waiting in line for one. So the private parking was equally conspicuous.

When creative minds are inspired by nature, amazing things can happen! Here's an interesting example... thanks to our pal Noah Forden for sending this along.

Visit a Farm, Online Print E-mail
Tuesday, 24 June 2008

If you haven't been out to visit a Rhode Island farm lately, here is a great video that should inspire you. It was shot last summer by the folks at YERT.com, a group of young filmmakers on an Environmental Road Trip across the U.S. You'll see Jamestown's Watson Farm, alpacas at Paradise Farm in Kingston, and more, plus share some of the goofy moments of life with animals.

Click here for another video by the same team, taking a tour of City Farm in Providence. And if you end up thinking it would be fun to visit a farm in RI, click here for tons of info from RI Farmways.

Building Green in R.I. Print E-mail
Tuesday, 06 November 2007
Last weekend, I visited a very cool, off-the-grid, environmentally friendly home in Hope Valley. This was one of the stops on the annual Green Buildings Open House tour organized by the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association. Ray Cayer's round house, built of concrete, is durable, well-insulated, easy to build and maintain, affordable, and crafted mainly from local materials. Check out our exclusive NNN Slideshow for a narrated, five-minute tour. Also: Click here for the NESEA Web site about the Green Homes tour (if you missed this one, there will be another one next October). Click here for Ray's Web site about his round-house project. p1020898.jpg

More than a Fishy Tale Print E-mail

Commercial fishermen are out on the Bay every day bringing home the catch, and they depend on a clean environment and healthy fish populations to keep the rest of us in fish & chips. NNN's executive producer DJ Johnson spent a day on the water aboard URI's Cap'n Bert to find out what the fishing life is like. You can try it too -- a few more trips, open to the public, are scheduled for Sept. 22 & 25 and Oct. 2. Click here for more info.
