The Norman Bird Sanctuary seeks two enthusiastic and high-energy individuals who have a love of the natural world to facilitate nature explorations, adventure activities, arts and crafts, stories, games and songs for small groups of young children at the Norman Bird Sanctuary, a wildlife refuge and environmental education center in Middletown, Rhode Island.
Position Description & Responsibilities: After completing a paid one week training session, the two instructors will lead the Fledglings program for up to ten 4 and 5 year olds. Responsibilities include leading hikes, teaching with our education animals, reading nature-themed stories, playing with puppets, and creating unique crafts. Teachers will provide enthusiastic and innovative instruction, teaching through hands-on and inquiry-based methods that encourage exploration, appreciation, and stewardship of the natural environment. This program will run for 3 hours a day on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Environmental Education, Biology, or Early Childhood Education preferred. Experience working with children in a responsible and professional setting. Demonstrated experience in formal and/or informal teaching desired. Knowledge of (or strong interest in) natural sciences preferred. Ability to work in a team, ability to interact well with visitors, and physical ability to work actively throughout the property in a variety of weather conditions. Enthusiasm for working with children and sense of humor is a must. Red Cross CPR and Standard First Aid Certifications are required (training will be held during camp week).
Times and Dates: 25 hours a week, 8AM-1PM. Staff training is June 16-20. The camp dates are June 23 - August 15, 2008. Pay Range: $8.00-10.00/hour depending on experience.
