Rhode Island College's geography department will present an all-day forum about climate change this Wednesday, April 16. "Global warming is a natural phenomenon, a scientific fact," said adjunct professor Jennifer Bonin, who organized the event. "We need to be prepared.”
Included in the day’s activities will be a demonstration of two hybrid cars, The Weather Channel’s weather classroom, a demonstration of Google Earth’s geographic mapping capabilities, a giant six-foot globe of the Earth, various exhibits and talks, and a Geopardy Bowl inspired by the Jeopardy game show. A viewing of former Vice President Al Gore’s documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, caps off the event at 6 p.m.
The event takes place in Gaige Hall from noon to 8 p.m, and it is free and open to all. Teachers on vacation week are encouraged to attend, resource materials and teaching tools will be available for them to take back to the classroom. “It’s a chance for everyone to get together for the common cause of making the world a better place, starting right in Rhode Island at Rhode Island College,” Bonin said.

If spring cleaning is on your agenda for this weekend, try to think a bit about the Earth as you work. Are you using Earth-friendly cleaning products? These are not only better for the environment, but safer for your family. Try Shaklee Clean & Green, Ecover, or Seventh Generation. We like that the Clean & Green products are highly concentrated, cutting down drastically on packaging waste. For more options, check out Grist and Consumer Reports' Greener Choices Web site.
When clearing out your junk, are you recycling as much as possible, and disposing of toxic waste correctly? Go to the RI Resource Recovery Web site for all the info about how to recycle when you can, and how to dispose when you must. Your town Web site will also have details about local trash and recycling options.
If you'd like to help out in a neighborhood cleanup to get the trash out of your local woods and marshes and open spaces, there are plenty to choose from all this month. You can find volunteer listings via the What Grows On in RI calendar.

It will take place at the Coastal Institute in the Weaver Auditorium on the URI Kingston campus. The event is free and open to all.

Featured speakers are Michael Sullivan, director of RI's Department of Environmental Management, Steve Majkut, the state's Chief of Air Resources. Matt Auten, of Environment Rhode Island, will talk about other policies and legislation to address the issue, including the Global Warming Solution Act of 2008. For more info contact Chris Kearns at
