While Rhode Island?s air quality is improving, our state, like a lot of states in the Northeast, doesn?t meet federal clean air standards. So starting this month, the state has upgraded its Ozone Alert Program to a new Air Quality Alert Program.
The new program will issue an alert on days when air quality is unhealthy due to a high level of particulate matter (microscopic pollutants) and/or ozone.
Unlike Ozone Alert Days, Air Quality Alert Days can occur at any time of the year. Ozone levels may be at their highest levels when the weather is warm, but fine particle pollutants can reach unhealthy levels even in winter.
On days forecast by the RI Department of Environmental Management as Air Quality Alert Days, all regular fixed-route RIPTA buses and trolleys are free.
RIPTA buses run on diesel fuel, which burns cleaner than standard auto gas. And its trolleys are fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG), another clean fuel.
