A group that is opposed to the proposed construction of an LNG facility in Fall River has organized an on-the-water protest for tomorrow, Saturday, August 16. The boats will gather in Mount Hope Bay to show their opposition to the construction of LNG facilities. This fight has been going on for several years now, and even though just about everyone opposes this plan, from government agencies to environmental groups to ad-hoc community groups, the developers continue to press on. For more info about the no-lng coalition, click here. LNG, or liquefied natural gas, is a fuel that is transported via large tankers to storage tanks. Because the gas is potentially explosive, the transport would require that large areas of the Bay be off limits to other boaters anytime a tanker is in transit. For more information about tomorrow's protest, contact Ray Gallison at 253-1852. Non-boaters who want to join the protest are invited to gather on Atlantic Boulevard in Fall River, right along Mt. Hope Bay, past Gold Medal Bakery, at around 10:30 Saturday morning. |
