Late Thursday afternoon a brush fire burned over part of Audubon's McIntosh Wildlife Refuge, home to the Environmental Education Center in Bristol, in the marsh just west of the East Bay Bike Path. Much of the habitat damage was limited to the phragmites stands, small shrubs and a few trees, said Jeff Hall, of ASRI.
"Unfortunately, a portion of our boardwalk in that area sustained severe damage," Hall said. "Thanks to the immediate response of the Bristol and Warren Fire Departments, the fire was contained and extinguished, although fire officials indicate that an occasional, and predictable, flare-up might occur."
The boardwalk from the bike path to the Bay will be closed until repairs and rebuilding are complete.
Audubon's Earth Day Celebration will go on tomorrow as scheduled. "Nature has an incredible ability to rebound, and we will witness this together as we watch the marsh's rebirth," says Hall.
